Prominent illustrator, Nicholas Amorosi’s masterful skill and love of detail is evident in this 1986, hand colored etching of the romantic Old West. The clear, bright light of the American Southwest brings brilliant color to this scene of a stagecoach pursued by Native Americans. I love everything about this: the muscular horses, the splashy water, the reflections, the sketchy trees on the horizon, the wavy line of the horsewhip…. It’s a framed artist’s proof print signed in the plate and signed and dated in pencil lower right. Numbered “AP 25/25″ and titled “Wolf Creek Pass” in pencil by artist. Well framed under glass in a solid oak frame, it’s matted to reveal the impression and the artist’s title, date, number and signature. Its cardboard backing is stamped Amorosi, Intaglio Dimensions, Inc… Lynbrook, NY which is where Nicholas Amorosi resides (at last report in his mid-nineties). This is in very good condition with strong color. There are 2-3 small spots of foxing in the lower left, as can be seen in my photo of that area. Impression measures 10″ x 16″ Frame measures 20″ x 26″ Weighs 6 lbs. Amorosi (New York, USA, 20th Century). Painter and master-etcher Nicholas Amorosi studied at Pratt Institute and the National Academy of Fine Art, NYC, and China Art Institute. From 1956 to 1988, he was the Chief Artist and Scientific Illustrator for the Department of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History, NYC. In his 32 years there, he produced illustrations for more than 100 books for the field of Anthropology. One of his greatest honors was having a group of his illustrations Knighted by the Crown of England. He received this honor for his illustrations of the Western Australian Desert Aborigines. Some of his works can be found in the collections of: the Explorers Club (NY), Pratt Institute, National Coffee Co. And the American Museum of Natural History, and others.
